"When two masters of historical fiction team up, it’s like 1+1=1000. I’m in awe of this impeccably researched, magnificently rendered, and breathlessly paced tale that kept me up late into the night reading, reflecting, and delving into the haunting true stories that inspired this novel. I cannot wait to recommend The Phoenix Crown to my own book club."

"An irresistible proposition for a gifted operatic soprano. The double lives of a talented young Chinese woman and her artist lover. A tenacious, globe-trotting female botanist. The legendary crown of an Empress. The devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and the ensuing rampant, deadly fire. Brilliant authors Kate Quinn and Janie Chang weave these threads together into seamless, page-turning masterpiece of history and suspense -- shot through with women rising up from the margins of society to claim their own singular futures. The Colours of Hope

"A beautiful story written by two excellent story-tellers. (I've re-read it already!)"

Amazing Women in History

"A wonderful collaboration between two very talented authors. This story has it all- disaster, love, hate, racism, misogyny, feminism, art, music, mystery and murder, and a group of characters who rose above it all. Truly amazing women in history sparkle in this work of historical fiction. Bravo!"

Good guys are the bad actors and the seemingly bad ones turn out to be good

"Historical fiction set in San Francisco, the Phoenix Crown delivers suspense, character development of its main characters. Too often books like this miss the role women played during these times. This one does not."

Underwhelming

"Underwhelming. I expect a lot from Kate Quinn. This book felt like 200 pages too long, too pointed and direct in it's anti-racism at times. It lacked plot development and I felt like the characters were not particularly developed either. There werent many character arcs or meaningful moments. It all felt simultaneously too long and too rushed somehow?"

If you like historical fiction and Kate Quinn. . . . you will like this book.

"I really liked this book. I wasn't sure how a book with 2 authors would work, but it did. I like historical fiction and Kate Quinn always does a great job. I recommend this book as I would all of Kate Quinn's books. She is a wonderful writer."

A Classic ""Quinn"" Read with Even More Added From Janie Chang

"Kate Quinn is one of my favourite authors and this book didn't disappoint. It was fairly fast paced, and it had interesting characters (as Quinn's novels always do). I equally enjoyed the information about San Francisco's Chinatown (prior to the fire) and general Chinese culture that was brought in through Suling's character. If you enjoy Kate Quinn (or I am sure Janie Chang, though this is my first of her novels I have read) or any historical fiction, this book is definitely one that you will enjoy."

Not her best work…

"It was worth the read, but just ‘okay’. Kate Quinn is usually so skilled at making unbelievable plot-lines seem real, and this a tidge boring and with less character development."
