Pretty cover

"Haven't actually had the chance to read as I am hoarding books to binge currently however the cover is incredibly gorgeous so 5 stars for that for now I suppose"

Matty C. (5/5)

Fantastic from start to finish

"No words can do this masterpiece justice. Once in a while, there comes a book that you just know will be a fantastic book just from the premise or the cover; this was one of those books for me. The world building, characters and all were just fantastic from start to finish. It was an instant need to read the second book for me."

Andrea (5/5)

Poppy war fortunately has my money

"Easily one of the best series I’ve ever read"

Sosososo good read

"Genuinely so captivating, i finished the book in two days because i refused to put it down, o read it at the dinner table, and throughout the night. R. F Kuang is always a very refeeshing read, she doesnt sugar coat her disdain for imperialism, nor does she pretend the horrific outcomes. . . werent horrific. The only reason i opted out of giving five stars, is my own personal opinion on some of the dialogue, I just didnt like how they spoke. If you had me read this when it came out, id have loved it, so i dont fault it or anything. Just a matter of changing prefrences. Another reason is (though i will warn this may be such a non issue because i havent read the other two books as of yet) i feel i wouldve enjoyed it more if it went deeper? But i could see how that may turn out to be just info dumping, she may have saved it for the other books, so i may change my views after having read them."

Reality meets Fantasy

"Fantasy that draws heavily on Chinese history. My first book from this author and writing/storytelling within the first few chapter has being ordering the special edition of book 2. The use of complex theme of power, morality and the cost of war makes this a thrilling adventure. A great collection to my grimdark shelve"

Sarah (4/5)

Stunning

"This is a stunning edition of the book. Loved it from the first page to the last."

Jessica (5/5)

The book that made me a fan of R. F. Kuang

"This edition is stunning. The narrative is strong and unpredictable in the best way. The author’s language is complex, academic, rich, and deeply engaging. I also like that this book doesn't romanticise war. Instead, it lays bare its horrific, brutal, and abominable aspects with an honesty. If you enjoy military fantasy and aren’t afraid of an honest, often brutal depiction of war, you will definitely appreciate this book. I became a big fan of R. F. Kuang after reading The Poppy War — she’s now one of my favourite authors of all time."

Anastasiia U. (5/5)

Read it again and again

"Amazing story, great writing, a book you can read over and over"

“The book starts as an epic bildungsroman, and just when you think it can’t get any darker, it does [...] Kuang pulls from East Asian history, including the brutality of the Second Sino-Japanese war, to weave a wholly unique experience.”  - Washington Post
“Kuang ambitiously begins a trilogy that doesn’t shy away from the darkest sides of her characters, wrapped in a confectionery of high-fantasy pulp. [...] The future of Rin in this world may appear quite dark, but that of the series seems bright indeed.”  - New York Daily News
“Battles. Bloodshed. Drugs. Amazing, amazing characters. Read it!”  - Peng Shepherd, author of The Cartographers
“[The Poppy War is] strikingly grim military fantasy that summons readers into an East Asian–-inspired world of battles, opium, gods, and monsters. Fans of Ken Liu’s The Grace of Kings will snap this one up.”  - Library Journal (starred review)
“Debut novelist Kuang creates an ambitious fantasy reimagining of Asian history populated by martial artists, philosopher-generals, and gods [...] This is a strong and dramatic launch to Kuang’s career.”  - Publishers Weekly
