An incredibly evocative and action-filled story of one man’s fight in the First World War, rich and raw with remarkable detail.
As he tended to the chores on his homestead, Lester Harper never imagined that he would turn in his hoe for a Lee-Enfield rifle on the Western Front. But the farmer from Pouce Coupe, in northern British Columbia, found himself at a party agreeing to help form a small-town regiment headed for France and the Great War. Lester left behind his wife, Mabel, in the shadow of the loss of their infant daughter, Hilda. A marksman before he even volunteered for the Canadian Army, Lester joined his cousin and friends, thousands of miles from his home, mere yards from the bayonets, bullets, and gas bombs of the feared Boche. In Till We Meet Again, the First World War comes to life in unprecedented detail, drawing on Lester’s letters as well as meticulous historical research.
Not since Timothy Findley’s The Wars, Tim Cook’s magisterial works about the First World War, or Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front has a book about a soldier’s life at the sharp end been told with such humour, gravitas, and in a heart-pounding narrative that drops you behind enemy lines. For at one point, Lester was trapped in a shell hole, a heartbeat away from the Germans setting up their machine gun to mow down his comrades.
This is a remarkable story, remarkably told. This book will be heralded by historians as a new approach to telling a soldier’s story and will become beloved by readers of military history and anyone who wants to understand what life was like for our boys behind the wire.

The impact of war then and now.
"A very realistic insight of a soldier day to day life during 1st world war. From rural BC to the trenches in France. From the joy receiving letters and parcels from his young wife back home to the sad reality of the senseless loss of lives. A great read!"

An excellent read, really puts you in the moment with a different perspective of war as seen through the eyes of a rosy eyed Canadian soldier from the start of his tour to the battle hardened veteran
"A book on the sights, sounds, grit and determination to get through in body and spirit of WW1 through the eyes and letters of a Canadian soldier."
— Rob C. (5/5)
Ammmm
"A good read. A great biography. Understandingly, missing many facts in general about ww1 but very interesting. Mind blowing how these young boys had to sacrifice their lives. The reality of war always blows my mind, how our young soldiers sacrifice everything for their country."

A Great Gift of a Veteran
"I purchased this book for my expat Canadian brother-in-law who is in Australia and is a veteran there. His interest in war prompted me to select a book on Canada in World War I."

A perfect combination of history and storytelling
"A rich visceral narrative. I was impacted by the detailed account of the harrowing, tragic experiences."
— Barry M. (5/5)
Unbelievable.
"Unbelievable. I am not a reader, but I have been enjoying watching a lot of war documentaries lately so I decided to pick up a war book to try. What a page turner this book is! I read 2/3 of this book in under 24 hours and can’t wait to get finished work to finish it. It feels like a movie. Of course there are missing parts of the war in general because this was only Lester’s story, and people should understand that. As far as I am concerned, this is a descriptive masterpiece by the author. Thank you for sparking my interest in reading. I greatly appreciate you sharing this story."

What Life Was Really Like on the Front
"Till We Meet Again grabs you from the first page and never lets go. The pacing is tight and the slang reads natural and effortless, so the front line scenes are easy to follow. Marriott paints a vivid, grounded picture of soldier life while also giving readers a clear understanding of the wider war. The prose is full of heart and small details that land hard. Emotional and readable, this is history that moves like a story and will appeal to anyone who wants honesty, context and real people at the center. Highly recommended"

Not worth the money
"Not what I was expecting. Kind of disappointed in the context"
