She has power over death. He has power over her. When two enemies strike a dangerous bargain, will they end a war . . . or ignite one? “With hauntingly poetic prose, Molly X. Chang spins a tale at the intersection of science fiction, fantasy, and the very real devastation that colonialism brings down on colonized peoples.”—Xiran Jay Zhao, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Iron Widow
Heroes die, cowards live. Daughter of a conquered world, Ruying hates the invaders who descended from the heavens long before she was born and defeated the magic of her people with technologies unlike anything her world had ever seen.
Blessed by Death, born with the ability to pull the life right out of mortal bodies, Ruying shouldn’t have to fear these foreign invaders, but she does. Especially because she wants to keep herself and her family safe.
When Ruying’s Gift is discovered by an enemy prince, he offers her an impossible deal: If she becomes his private assassin and eliminates his political rivals—whose deaths he swears would be for the good of both their worlds and would protect her people from further brutalization—her family will never starve or suffer harm again. But to accept this bargain, she must use the powers she has always feared, powers that will shave years off her own existence.
Can Ruying trust this prince, whose promises of a better world make her heart ache and whose smiles make her pulse beat faster? Are the evils of this agreement really in the service of a much greater good? Or will she betray her entire nation by protecting those she loves the most?

One of the best books i have ever read!
"One of the best books I have ever read. A beautiful story about a young girl making impossible choices to protect her grandmother and sister from a brewing war. One of the most haunting and poetic books I have read in a long time. It is a shame the author is being harassed by racists and other authors because of the size of her book deal. This author is so talented and she deserve every penny she got for this masterpiece. I would recommend reading the book for yourself and not let the racists succeed in their god-awful smear campaign"

Absolutely Awful
"Absolutely awful. The plot and the writing itself were just fine other than a few odd things here and there, however I could not get past the fact that the author made a real tragedy/warcrime into a book about magic, romance with the enemy, and overall erasure of the actual tragedy. The book is based on the invasion of manchuria during the second world war by the japanese. Yet she makes japan into rome, makes them come through a portal in the sky that is never explained, and makes the main character fall in love with the man colonizing and killing her people."

Thrilling and Fantastic
"Great debut by a very promising author! Chang does a fantastic job putting a fresh spin on tired tropes. Imbued with dynamic characters, interesting world building it’s a great read!_x000D_ _x000D_ Ps. The book has been subjected to review bombing by Cait Corrain (booktok will know what I’m talking about) and the author has been harassed for portraying “colonizer romance,” without spoilers I really recommend READING the book to judge that assessment."

"This book had so much potential. The world, the rebellion, and the characters were all interesting and had so much potential, it is weird that there is a made up country vs. A real empire , but in modern day. The romance ruined it. I agree with the other reviewers that it is a colonizer romance. There are no redeeming qualities in Antony. He has the power to save her friend after she asks and he chooses not to; he is delusional about how his want for power is different than his family’s; he allows her to be harmed and suffer; he only sees her country as something to possess; he uses her over and over again for his own benefit; the list goes on. The only way it would work is if she becomes a villain as well. But the whole book has been building her up to not be the villain, it would be a complete change in her character. Maybe the sequel can redeem it by having them just be rivals and adding in another love interest that is Roman, but not with all the power. It is also unbelievable that they have been colonized for so long and learned nothing of science."

"Book hasn’t come out yet, but I’m excited for it since it seems to give the same vibes as iron widow which was very suspenseful and packed with action."
