In time for the 200th anniversary of her birth, a Penguin Hardcover Classics edition of the book many believe to be Charlotte Brontë's crowning achievement
With neither friends nor family, Lucy Snowe sets sail from England to find employment in a girls' boarding school in the small town of Villette. There she struggles to retain her self-possession in the face of unruly pupils, an initially suspicious headmaster, and her own complex feelings, first for the school's English doctor and then for the dictatorial professor Paul Emmanuel. Drawing on her own deeply unhappy experiences as a governess in Brussels, Charlotte Brontë's last and most autobiographical novel is a powerfully moving study of isolation and the pain of unrequited love.

Lots of French
"The story is great but I needed to have google translate open the entire time because there were so many phrases and short conversations in French that you couldn’t just skip over."
— Rabecca (4/5)
So beautiful!
"Adding to my collection. Love this classics edition."
— SamVL (5/5)
Better Than Jane Eyre (in my personal opinion anyways)
"This story is utterly my favourite from Charlotte Brontë. It is a direct reflection of her time during pregnancy and is no slouch with the English vocabulary. Highly recommend reading and triumphs over Jane Eyre in my personal opinion."
— Samantha (5/5)
Good!!!
"Another great read by Charlotte. She never ceases to spark my imagination or interests. Well written."

Villette
"A bit tough to get through but enjoyed the writing."
— Cathy (3/5)
Stunningly well written
"The Brontës make it difficult for me to classify one book as my favourite. I have always maintained that Jane Eyre is my favourite book of all time, but every time I read Shirley, Villette, or Wuthering Heights I doubt myself. Villette is gorgeous, there are no other words. If you enjoyed Jane Eyre even in the slightest, do yourself a favour and read this."
— Mimi W. (5/5)
Villette
"As much as I enjoyed this read, it seemed there was a lot of gaps in the storyline making it a little difficult to follow along. Other than that I enjoyed it."
— Emasi (3/5)
Villette
"I love Jane Eyre so much so I couldn't wait to read Villette, I found it to be a good book but not quite what Jane Eyre was. Still a classic that I'm glad I read. A note on the actual book itself- I found that the print on the outside faded and rubbed off quite easily. I thought it might just be my copy so I exchanged it in store and the same thing happened again. If you like to travel around with your books or toss them in and out of bags I'd recommend another copy as this one looks well used very fast. If you are looking for a shelf copy this book is beautiful. #plumreview"

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was born in Yorkshire. As a child, she was sent to boarding school, where two of her sisters died; she was subsequently educated at home with her younger siblings, Emily, Branwell, and Anne. As an adult, Charlotte worked as a governess and taught in a school in Brussels. Jane Eyre was first published in 1847 under the pen-name Currer Bell, and was followed by Shirley (1848), Villette (1853) and The Professor (posthumously published in 1857). In 1854 Charlotte married her father's curate, Arthur Bell Nicholls. She died in March of the following year.
