From the internationally bestselling author of Tigana, All the Seas of the World, and A Brightness Long Ago comes a majestic new novel of love and war that brilliantly evokes the drama and turbulence of medieval France.
Thierry Villar is a well-known—even notorious—tavern poet, intimately familiar with the rogues and shadows of that world, but not at all with courts and power. He is an unlikely person, despite his quickness, to be swept into the deadly contests of ambitious royals, assassins, and invading armies.
But he is indeed drawn into all these things on a savagely cold night in his beloved city of Orane. And so Thierry must use all the intelligence and charm he can muster as power struggles merge with a decades-long war to bring his country to the brink of destruction.
As he does, he meets his poetic equal in an aristocratic woman and is drawn to more than one unsettling person with a connection to the world beyond this one. He also crosses paths with an extraordinary young woman driven by voices within to try to heal the ailing king — and help his forces in war. A wide and varied set of people from all walks of life take their places in the rich tapestry of this story.
Both sweeping and intimate, Written on the Dark is an elegant tour de force about power and ambition playing out amid the equally intense human need for art and beauty, and memories to be left behind.

INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER A Globe and Mail Best Book of the Year
Praise for Written on the Dark:
“The brilliance of Written on the Dark is its capacity to be many things at once. It’s a great story, or series of stories, moving from murder mystery to court drama to war epic to tale of love and loss and beyond, like a song changing keys. And it works. . . . Written on the Dark is equally as impressive for its accessibility and its density. . . But its accessibility doesn’t undermine its insightfulness, which is to say that a lot happens in the novel that reveals both something about the world in which the story unfolds, and our own. It’s quite an achievement.” —The Globe and Mail
“An absolutely astonishing novel about poetry, and war, and what it means to be human, by our greatest living writer of the fantastic. Written on the Dark shines with its own unearthly light: Guy Gavriel Kay has given us, quite simply, a masterpiece." —J.M. Miro, international bestselling author of Ordinary Monsters and Bringer of Dust
"The pen proves mightier than the sword in this masterful historical fantasy. . . . Kay burnishes his reputation for worldbuilding with this believable, magic-tinged analogue for medieval France." —Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Kay once again delivers a skillful blend of history and fantasy that captures both the beauty and brutality of the past with poetic precision. His sophisticated prose elevates every scene, intertwining fleeting joys and deep sorrows into a narrative that resonates long after the final page. . . . In addition to being a profound meditation on history, identity, and the human condition, this novel stands as a testament to Kay’s unparalleled storytelling.” —Library Journal
“There are more than a few flashes of brilliance in Written on the Dark, as well as some profoundly moving insights and some of Kay’s most memorable characters.” —Locus
“Written on the Dark is a wonderful read filled with elegance and danger. . . . Kay has done his usual masterful job of bringing a time and era to life. . . . These aren’t unblemished societies, as he depicts them warts and all, but they are fascinating and enthralling, making you wish your visit would last just a little longer.” —Blog Critics
"A beautiful depiction of a world that just might have been." —Reactor Magazine
"Cozy read for a chilly winter weekend. I had never read fantasy, but this was a good introduction. While not my favorite genre, I can appreciate how well the author weaved an intricate world and gave us a glimpse into the geopolitical dynamics of between France and England during medieval times."
— Mady (4/5)
Written on the Dark is a story about what we know and what we don't know and the stories about such things.
"As with his other works, his prose is exemplary, but from a thematic level not one of his strongest works. He is without a doubt, the best historically based fantasy writer out there bar none."
— Phrontistery (4/5)

A fun summer page-turner
"I enjoyed this one right from the first few pages! A real page-turner, with interesting characters, a good mystery, and some GGK easter eggs. Highly recommended."

Not up to his par
"I've read all of Kay's novels and Written on the Dark is the thinnest in its plot and prose. Even so, one couldn't say its a bad story. Kay is that good of a writer. From what I know about Kay's loves and inklings around history and poetry, Witten on the Dark seems like a work of indulgence for Guy. I believe he even suggests as much in his Author's Notes at the end. My single biggest peeve with the book is when the author subtly mentions himself in the story. It's just for a single sentence or two but it reminded me of Stephen King doing the same in his Dark Tower series (and not in a good way). TLDR; It's not a bad book but if you're interested in checking out GGK's writing, there are many other better choices, imo."
