臺灣大學史也幾乎就是臺灣各學科的發展史。
臺灣大學的歷史可以上溯至臺北帝國大學。1928年創立時，臺北帝大即確立為一所綜合大學，陸續設置文政、理農、醫學和工學部。學部採講座制，由一位專任教授主持，帶領轄下師生於教學同時進行研究調查採集。除了有形的成果外，更重要的是累積了無形的資產，並從中建構出臺灣各科學問的基礎。
本書收錄13篇論文，內容為臺北帝國大學文政學部之研究，分述哲學科、史學科、文學科、政學科及圖書館之建置過程、歷史遞嬗及學術傳承。
