First he rewrote the record book. Now, to mark the NHL's ninety-ninth anniversary, Wayne Gretzky has written the story of our game.
In 99: Stories of the Game, Gretzky looks back on the last ninety-nine years and tells us, from his point of view, about the NHL’s most memorable moments. We already know what he means to the game. Now he shows us what the game means to him.
From hockey's fierce early battles on natural ice; through its mythical golden era, where Howe, Richard, Béliveau, Hull, Orr, and Esposito defined greatness; through the unforgettable dynasties in Montreal, New York, and Edmonton and the success stories of today’s NHL, Gretzky takes us onto the ice and into the dressing room to share never-before-published stories about the great players and great characters who have inspired him.
With the insight of someone who knows the incomparable thrill of lifting the Stanley Cup, as well as the agony of falling short against a bitter rival, Gretzky weaves in his own memories with the saga of the game that has meant so much to him.
Warm, direct, and personal, these are accounts of friendship and rivalry, triumphs and upsets, role players and heroes. All of them great stories of the game.

“...the best hockey book ever written...The man has every record there is, might as well notch his name down for best hockey book.” —Colin Fleming, Sports Illustrated
“…the literary mirror of the former centreman’s sporting mind: Darting, moving and winding about, rarely wasting an opportunity to go somewhere you did not expect it to go.” —Dave Bidini, The Star
“The most interesting athletes are never the stars on the ascent or the gods at the top of the game, but rather the humans on the other side. For all he was in his prime, 99, and the stories he shares, are about as human as they get.”—Brett Popplewell, The Globe and Mail
“One of the most enjoyable hockey books to be published in many years.”—Wes Lukowsky, Booklist (starred review) “Wayne Gretzky’s99 glides across a lifetime of high sticks and higher stakes.”—Vanity Fair
“The Great One delivers a personal history of the National Hockey League…Gretzky’s sense of his sport’s history rings clearly throughout these pages, as if he is the tour guide of a museum in which he also has created some of the best art…This enjoyable book provides an overview that will educate longtime fans and relative newcomers alike.”—Kirkus Reviews
“…you will never watch a hockey game in the same manner again.” —Colin Fleming, Sports Illustrated
“This book showcases some of hockey’s best moments through the keen eyes of an avid student, lover, and ambassador of the game… Essential for all hockey fans, old and new.”—Library Journal
“Though Gretzky is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player of all time, he's utterly Canadian in the way he focuses on his idols and their talents, not his own. If anything, when he mentions his place in the NHL's narrative, he's humble and self-deprecating.”—Canadian Living

Ghost Writer heaven
"Author Wayne Gretzky w/ Kirstie McLellan Day? More like McLellan Day authors polite stories with occasional comments from Wayne Gretzky! Stories we all heard a million times, in any book about the NHL, and it's teams and history. I was expecting more insight from the Great One, like rivalry with the Calgary Flames, facing Gilmour, hardest players to play against, Oilers locker room feel etc. Instead, first story is about Howie Morenz, who died decades before Gretzky was born!!! Do we really need to know about the expansion Minnesota North Stars and CA Golden Seals? Canada Cup chapters more promising, but too few of Gretzky insights are found in book. Very disappointing."

WAYNE GRETZKY, nicknamed “The Great One,” is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player ever. He is the leading scorer in NHL history, and is the only NHL player to total more than two hundred points in one season—a feat he accomplished four times. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held sixty-one separate NHL records, and his honors included thirty-one major trophies and awards. His teams included the Edmonton Oilers, with whom he won four Stanley Cups; the Los Angeles Kings, with whom he reached the Stanley Cup final; the St. Louis Blues; and the New York Rangers. Following his retirement, he became the tenth and final player to be ushered into the Hall of Fame with no waiting period, and the first to have his number retired league-wide. He was also executive director of Canada’s 2002 Olympic gold medal–winning men’s hockey team, and is an accomplished businessman and philanthropist. He splits his time between Canada and California.
KIRSTIE McLELLAN DAY ranks among the top hockey book writers in the world thanks to four national bestsellers: Theo Fleury’s memoir Playing with Fire, Bob Probert's Tough Guy, and Ron MacLean's Cornered and Hockey Towns. Kirstie is a mother of five and is married to television producer Larry Day.
