Heather’s Review

I adored The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman and have been waiting patiently for a follow-up novel. Fourteen years later, it has arrived—and it was worth the wait.

Set in the outback of Western Australia, the story centres around the McBride family, who are fourth-generation ranchers. The values of honesty, hard work, resilience, and neighbourliness are woven into the very fabric of the land.

As we begin the story, there are five members of the immediate McBride family: patriarch Phil; his wife and love of his life, Lorna; and their three children, eldest son Warren, daughter Rosie, and youngest son Matt.

A freak accident early on takes the lives of both Phil and Warren. As might be expected, the lives of those who remain are changed forever. What follows is a decades-spanning saga of secrets, sacrifice, a child of unknown parentage, and a transformative understanding of what it means to be a family.

Stedman's ability to render the quiet beauty and feel of the land is impressive, as is the empathy she eventually evokes for her flawed characters.

This book will move you and leave an imprint.
