“A witty, unapologetically feminist story of women’s suffering, courage, and endurance… Haynes' freshly modern version of an ancient tale is perfect for our times.” - Booklist

A Thousand Ships does more than acknowledge the suffering of women. It tells in lively fashion gripping tales of bravery, treachery and revenge. . . . It’s a timely notion as the modern world reckons with who gets to tell the stories of its diverse populations." - Washington Post
“In Natalie Haynes’ own brilliant construction, the 10-year tale of the Trojan War is retold by the many women ignored, widowed, enslaved, heartbroken and snuffed out by the pride and stupidity of warring men…. A fresh and utterly satisfying feminist take on one of the oldest stories in Western literature.” - Melissa Gray, NPR Best Books of the Year

A retelling of female strength

"The female perspective is finally heard through the familiar cacophony of male glory that usually burdens this tale. The suffering and strength of the women who lived and died for the pride of men was compelling and kept me engaged. This is worth the read."

Rereading again and again!

"It’s a beautiful book, it’s well written, the story is put together in a way that has you hooked. The description is right, the women of the Trojan war have waited too long for their story to be told but I’m glad it was told by Natalie Haynes! Truly a beautiful work."

Enthralling and Empowering

"Absolutely excellent. Simply, this is one of the most powerful and compelling books I've ever read. It's not a comfort read, but it is expertly crafted and worth any readers time. The story is told from multiple perspectives of those characters who lived before, during, and after the Trojan war. It's almost like a series of historical journals and letters. Its dozens of stories from dozens of different women: princesses, queens, goddesses, warriors, wives, each with a story to tell about the cost of a war that should never have been fought. I found every story empowering and each woman strong, particularly Penelope and Cassandra. They were treated with respect when the classical myths have often let them go unheard or labeled them as minor characters. Calliope's chapters, in particular, are not shy with this fact. The themes are heartwrenching and tragic, but never entirely hopeless. Despite the misery these women go through, they remain strong until the last and their courage is what makes the book so compelling. That, combined with Haynes's outstanding prose. Fans of historical fantasy, Greek mythology, and empowering fiction will find plenty to enjoy here. I can see why this book has won so many awards and it deserves all its accolades and then some. A must have for all readers looking for power and inspiration."
