Quietly intense, emotional + riveting!

"4. 5 STARS - I've read a few of Will Dean's books with The Last Thing to Burn being my favourite . . . that is, until now. Adrift is not his usual thriller style. While still intense and a page-turner, Adrift is, at times, a deeply uncomfortable story that gives readers a bird's eye view into a toxic household where a mother and her son are at the hands of their manipulative and narcissistic husband/father. Dysfunctional with a capital D!: The story centres around Drew, Peggy and their 14-year-old son Samson. Sam, a scrawny redhead, is bullied at school but at the end of the school day, he returns to the family's houseboat where the emotional abuse is even worse. At the mercy of his overbearing father, Sam and his mother Peggy live in a state of constant fear, volatility and isolation. There were some scenes in this book that were hard to read, but I appreciated that the author didn't soften the blow of the emotional abuse. Dean tackles very disturbing, toxic behaviours and shows their impact on generations of a family and how abuse can become someone's 'normal'. Drew is a character who could give a Master class in gaslighting, emotional abuse and creating toxic, isolating environments and I hated him. I HATED him to my very core. On the flip side, I was rooting for Peggy and Sam to find a way to get out from under Drew's suffocating power and irrational paranoia. This is a quietly intense and deeply emotional read that will keep readers riveted. The topics addressed will create interesting discussion, making it a great pick for book clubs."

"Adrift is a relentless mix of secrets, lies and jaw dropping twists. This book had me in a chokehold from beginning to end and was an intense and gripping read. We meet a family of three: Drew the controlling father, Peggy the mother and Samson the teenage son. Both Peggy and Samson are doing their utmost to survive Drew as he dominates with control , being condescending and fear. Yet somehow you get so attached to these characters and want them to suceed and survive. I leave the rest of the harrowing journey to reader as I dont want to give anything away. This is my first but not my last Will Dean book who's writing is sharp, intense and has you on the edge of your seat."

Compelling!

"A riveting read! Centering around a couple and their teenage son this compelling tale of a family and the secrets they hide, not only from the people around them but also from one another. Peggy, wife and mother, working in the local library and secretly writing; Drew, the aspiring-but-failing author, ruling his wife and son relentlessly; and Samson, the teenager, bullied by his peers. With a history of domestic abuse running through generations, struggles to make lasting relationships, and the veil of pretence to others, each character is flawlessly portrayed by Will Dean. . . any one of us could know someone like any of them. . . their secrets hidden so well. This book really made me think about the lengths that people can, and do, go to in order to hide reality from friends and work colleagues; how outsiders can easily be fooled by the facade; and how terrible the truth can actually be. I found Peggy to be very relatable, the fierceness with which she does all she can to shelter Samson and to stop the cycle, for the love of her son, and her own sanity. Adrift is a fabulous read; disturbing at times, uplifting at others; definitely one that will stick in the mind long after finishing. . . Highly recommended. Many thanks to NetGalley for my ARC, this is my unbiased review."
