A love letter to Syria and its people, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow is a speculative novel set amid the Syrian Revolution, burning with the fires of hope, love, and possibility. Perfect for fans of The Book Thief and Salt to the Sea.
Salama Kassab was a pharmacy student when the cries for freedom broke out in Syria. She still had her parents and her big brother; she still had her home. She had a normal teenager’s life.
Now Salama volunteers at a hospital in Homs, helping the wounded who flood through the doors daily. Secretly, though, she is desperate to find a way out of her beloved country before her sister-in-law, Layla, gives birth. So desperate, that she has manifested a physical embodiment of her fear in the form of her imagined companion, Khawf, who haunts her every move in an effort to keep her safe.
But even with Khawf pressing her to leave, Salama is torn between her loyalty to her country and her conviction to survive. Salama must contend with bullets and bombs, military assaults, and her shifting sense of morality before she might finally breathe free. And when she crosses paths with the boy she was supposed to meet one fateful day, she starts to doubt her resolve in leaving home at all.
Soon, Salama must learn to see the events around her for what they truly are—not a war, but a revolution—and decide how she, too, will cry for Syria’s freedom.

"A heart felt story of love and hope during the ongoing Syrian war. A reminder of the human toll, impacts, the tremendous loss of family, friends and your home. The author finds a way to make you feel all of the raw emotions. Hard to read at times, but equally hard to put dow,"

Heartbreaking, Beautiful, and Full of Hope
"This book completely gripped me from the first page. Zoulfa Katouh does an incredible job weaving together the brutal realities of war with moments of love, resilience, and hope. The writing is poetic yet raw, and the characters felt so real that I couldn’t stop thinking about them long after I closed the book. What I loved most was how it balanced heartbreak with humanity—yes, it was emotional and at times very heavy, but it also reminded me of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of compassion. There were passages that truly made me pause and reflect on how much we take for granted in our everyday lives. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because some parts felt a little slow in pacing, but overall it’s a powerful, unforgettable story. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a book that will move them, challenge them, and stay with them long after reading."

This one will make you cry!
"One of the hardest books i have read so far, but also one of the most beautiful, it will make you feel all the pain, anxiety and suffering the characters have to deal with with their life in the middle of the syrian revolution, but also their hope, resilience and love. It makes you appreciate your reality in whole other level while giving a voice to the victims of a conflict not talked about enough. Definitely deserves a top spot in your TBR list. PS: If you are a Taylor Swift fan, the acknowledgments are the cherry on top!"

"As Long As the Lemon Trees Grow is hauntingly beautiful. Katouh masterfully tells a story that's both painful and captivating, you won't be able to put the book down. Her characters are so achingly real they'll live with you weeks after you've finished reading. The story manages to embrace fear in the time of war, love in spite of loss, and hope in the face of darkness. I cannot stress it enough, this book is a must read." —Huda Fahmy author of Huda F Are You?
