Belligerence starts off in a little town called Kirkwood, it tells the story of a Loup-garou, named Lark Hull, he could turn at will, he worked as a Lumberjack, and had lived for five-hundred years, he had to friends, Gaagil, a Native American, and Eulalie, a Strix, a Vamperic-being that had been around for much longer, she was a witch when she was human, and became the undead, when another witch cursed her, Eulalie asked to be made like Lark, but the witch had ill intentions towards her.
Eulalie is a sub-character, but she sets the tone for the book. Lark remains the main character, as the book revolves around his life story. Eulalie bewitches the Sheriff of the little town, Michael Morganton, whom becomes a sub-character. With the murders that look place on the mountains, Lark was his only suspect. Lark accidently kills a human female, and vows never to kill again. A friendship begins between Lark and Michael, a distant relative, of the woman Lark was dating, for the past five years, Brooklyn.
Lark reveals himself to Brooklyn and Michael, they get married, and move away, Brooklyn is soon with child, but their marriage, didn’t last. Lark returns to his cabin in the mountains, and discovers that Michael was under another kind of curse. Lark’s ‘brother’ Jesse is a sub-character and Lark asks Jesse to find help, Eulalie had declared war on the humans and the town. Michael evacuates the town. Jesse returns with help, in the form of Violet and Marcus, two characters from a book called Shattered Resistance. Lark and Violet fall in love, but that is short lived, when Zane Adam Wentworth comes knocking. Zane is a main character throughout the book, he is the main character in Shattered Resistance, three books in total.
Zane is reunited with his sons, Blane, Daniel and Rob, all three are main characters, and his daughter Nievee’, Violet is her biological mother. They need to defend the town from the Strix, Lark had in avertedly caused Eulalie to miss-carry, and she was out for blood.
The town being evacuated left it wide open for the creatures from the depth of Hell, to start the inevitable war. Snake-like creatures and the Strix nearly destroy the little town. Viper, a Draquizi, and a former alliance of Zane, comes to their rescue, so does Zane’s Angelic sons, Jael and Tyler, whom are main characters.
Once all is done and dusted, Michael gives up his badge. Gaagil, returns and basically drops Lark’s son off and leaves. Biziil was left to run wild, and Lark had a damn hard time trying to tame a feral wolf.
Jesse, takes Biziil under his wing, and that changes the hybrids life.
Lark joins the Wentworth Clan, whom consisted of the Crisconis, tiger-human hybrids, and the Likos from whom Lark is descendant, Ladon and Layan are brothers and two main characters. They are half wolf and half human, but they do not turn, they had been in wolf form for thousands of years, they walk upright and talk, and Ladon, is Zane’s best friend.
Zane bought an island, with a castle intact, for them to call home, but nothing is quite that simple in their lives, Zane’s adversary Azaha makes an appearance, in Shattered Resistance he led to the death of Zane, his sons and their sons and most of Zane’s Clan, and all the Mermen and Mermaids, this will be important later in the book, as Zane and his Clan were Aquatic beings, and Zane is the master of the ocean.
Azaha wants Lark dead, and he sends his henchmen to do his dirty work for him. Smokey is a much loved character, a dragon Zane had rescued in Shattered Resistance.
The first trap that was set, nearly blinded Lark, the second trap, he needed a transfusion, and Smokey gave him his blood, which mutated Lark, he had dragon eyes and venom.
The mutations made Lark the most feared being, and Azaha sends the Urvern, to kill all of them. The Urvern are Bear-like demonic beings with scorpion tails, their sight is poor, but the hearing his acute. Zane and Delmara are two main characters Lark and Delmara had an offspring they named Raff, he and Smokey were bonded, as the blood of the dragon ran through the whelp.
The Urvern destroy the castle and the lands around it, Gaagil is killed, Lark is maimed when the venom from a Urvern splatters all over his chest.
Zane relocates them once more. Lark and Delmara get married, Delmara is the goddess of the ocean, and Zane’s ex-wife. Zane remarries his childhood sweetheart, whom became a universal protector, as his other Clan-member Crimson, who remain a main character, Crimson is a Blood-god, and a healer.
Three new men join the Clan, Dresden and his two sons Kale and Fallon, whom become sub-characters and Zane forces Nievee’ and Violet to marry them, that worked out well. While Delmara was briefly married to Zane, she gave birth to the first Merman in a thousand years, Sable remains a main character. Abrux, one of Azaha’s henchmen have been after Tyler for many years, as Tyler’s biological father is an Angel named Hunter, and his mother is Delmara.
Raff, Delmara and Lark’s offspring, kills Abrux with his venom. Azaha doesn’t take too kindly to this and he sends the ocean against Zane and the Clan. The new castle is flooded, those whom couldn’t reach land where trapped. Smokey and Raff, only a boy, try and clear a path for the boats, but Smokey is bitten and Raff falls into the water, he and Smokey are ripped to pieces.
Lark leaves the Clan for a brief period, and on his return, he finds Delmara and Ladon in a compromising position. A whelp is born from their union. Lark remains Zane’s protector, he had been shot at, poisoned and attacked by beings he didn’t know.
Zane relocates the Clan to Grand Baie, and for a while war stopped, until Jade and Gergard turn up, and kill Lark’s brother, his son Biziil and Jesse’s husband Michael.
Zane does everything in his power to get them back, as he had the power to restore their life source. They had to battle another enemy, the Pulporon, a shark-like being with the body of an octopus, to get the trio back. They succeed, and Marcus sends the trio home.
On arriving back home, the ‘Boss’ was waiting for Zane, he had little Leath at his feet, and he gave Zane a choice, kill Lark, or the whelp dies. And in return, the Boss, would leave the Clan to resume their peaceful lives, and no more wars would be decreed on the Clan, if Zane kills Lark with the dagger forged in Hell.
Zane didn’t have much of a choice, he kills Lark. The body and the Boss disappears.
Zane searches for Lark, when he returns home, Blane tells him not to go out again to find Lark, it would place a target on all of them. Zane is a stubborn character, and he knew there was only one way he could find Lark, and that’s if he nearly died.
The book ends, where Zane opens his eyes in Lark’s cabin, and Jael standing next to the bed.
Jael wanted to know where he should take them, and Lark answered, home. Zane and Lark had merged as one.
Belligerence is a book about war, the fight between good and evil, unspeakable monsters and things of nightmares, however at it’s heart, it is a book of love, about loyalty and family. The book shows, the reader that at times, some beings don’t want to be evil, as with Donecian and the Riny, Donecian leaves his old life behind, and becomes human, but he succumbs in the flood that destroyed the second island Zane bought. Another took his place, a being named Ryka, they fought alongside Zane, to cull the Pulporon, beings four times the size of the Kraken, Zane wanted to give them back their human lives, but Ryka knew, his Boss would hunt everyone down, until he killed them including Zane and his Clan.
Belligerence is fast paced, filled with horrors, and pain but above all else, love.
