Akeel Bilgrami is the Sidney Morgenbesser Professor of Philosophy and a professor on the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University. His books include Who's Afraid of Academic Freedom? (Columbia University Press, 2014); Secularism, Identity, and Enchantment (2014); Self-Knowledge and Resentment (2012); and Belief and Meaning (1995).
This collection of essays represents an all-star roster of voices, organized around the question of whether or not the “secular age,” detailed so painstakingly in Charles Taylor’s seminal 2007 work, can travel to or carry lessons for other parts of the world. . .The book is a provocative yet focused contribution to the literature on non-European secularisms that definitely moves debates about the religious/secular binary and its forms and implications on a global scale forward in creative ways.
