Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Galen presents a comprehensive account of the afterlife of the corpus of the second-century AD Greek physician Galen of Pergamum. In 31 chapters, written by a range of experts in the field, it shows how Galen was adopted, adapted, admired, contested, and criticised across diverse intellectual environments and geographical regions, from Late Antiquity to the present day, and from Europe to North Africa, the Middle and the Far East.
The volume offers both introductory material and new analysis on the transmission and dissemination of Galen’s works and ideas through translations into Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Hebrew and other languages, the impact of Galenic thought on medical practice, as well as his influence in non-medical contexts, including philosophy and alchemy.

Petros Bouras-Vallianatos, Ph.D. (2015) King’s College London, is a Wellcome
Trust Lecturer in History of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He has
published on Byzantine medicine and pharmacology, cross-cultural medical
exchanges in the Eastern Mediterranean, the reception of the classical medical
tradition in the Middle Ages, and Greek palaeography.
Barbara Zipser, Dr. Phil. (2003) Heidelberg, is a Lecturer at Royal Holloway University whose main field of research is the manuscript tradition of Greek medical works, including the vernacular. Her research has been primarily funded by the Wellcome Trust.
"(...) this volume is eminently readable. The editors have achieved a level of consistency in style and substance that is admirable. Nothing so exhaustive or authoritative has been published before, and it will be a long, long time before it will be superseded - if ever." - J.T.H Connor, in: Mouseion, Journal of the Classical Association of Canada, 2020
"This impressive volume (just under 700 pages) on the reception of the Greek doctor Galen is in many ways a tour de force (...) It is hoped that this Companion will help launch further efforts to help re-contextualize Galen's oeuvre in our intellectual (not just medical) history. This new book certainly provides a very helpful guide through the maze of traditions that transmitted and used Galen. Excellent bibliographies and a set of indices will help readers navigate and make the most of the book." - Caroline Petit, in: International Journal of the Classical Tradition, 2020
"We must congratulate the two editors, Petros Bouras-Vallianatos and Barbara Zipser, on this imposing volume (684 pages) devoted to the reception of the works of Galen, a physician from Pergamum, active in the second century C.E. (...) In all the contributions, the mastery of primary sources (mainly medieval manuscripts and printed editions) and bibliographical sources is impressive. Therefore, even if it is not exhaustive, the volume will serve as an excellent scientific basis for going deeper into the study of Galen’s reception in the different and rich cultural fields concerned. The two indexes that close the volume (an Index Rerum et Nominum and an Index Locorum) constitute both a valuable aid to the reader and an overview of the richness of the fields, geographies, and periods covered." - Alessia Guardasole, in: Isis, 2020
- Lutz Alexander Graumann, in: H-Soz-Kult, 2020
