Reviews

One can love two people at same time!

"When I began reading the book, was wondering why would one want to run back to her ex, isn’t that a cliche plot! But as we read through the chapters, it makes more sense why she was in between. Why she could love both men at the same time? Because if one doesn’t get the closure for all the love shown the right way and the sacrifices made, then heart always seeks to find the cure to an open wound that has lasted forever!"

Intriguing

"I loved this book. It had drama, hope and love. A strong female looking for something she lost. A good read!"

Broken Country

"I enjoyed this book, but found some of the characters to be unbelievable. The main character does not evoke empathy. I found it hard to believe that it got so much hype."

For every action, there is a reaction.

"I bought this after reading it was one of the best of 2025. Many reviews have been positive, but some negative about the main character and her decisions during her youth that impacted her adult life. How many of us can say we made the right decision every time in our lives? How some may feel should not take away from the beautiful descriptions of the area she lives in, nature, animals, community. The characters are human with goodness and faults. Enjoyed this and would recommend it."

Jaw dropping in the best way

"I’m so happy I bought this book. I actually was looking at buying another book in store but then I picked this up and got it instead. The book is amazing. At first I was confused on the timeline but you pick up easily. Clare does an excellent job at exploring the themes of loss, love, lust, alcohol addiction, violence, grief and hope. My jaw dropped at the plot twists and the ending made me cry. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time."

Terrible book

"I bought this book because it was a Heather Recommended book. I'm sorely disappointed. It was such a slow read with avery anticlimactic ending. Sadly books are getting dimmer every year."

“Stirring, poetic and mysterious, Clare Leslie Hall’s novel, BROKEN COUNTRY, reveals how tender and innocent love between a boy and a girl can alter the lives of families for generations.  Even on a quaint and quiet sheep farm of rural England, misguided passion brings murder and criminal charges against the most innocent of players because human nature is far from tame.  Yet, even as love destroys, it can return to heal on the same sacred meadow where it was first conceived.  This evocative, sensitive and compelling novel fires directly at the human heart and hits the mark.” –DELIA OWENS, New York Times bestselling author of Where the Crawdads Sing
“BROKEN COUNTRY is a beautifully observed and brilliantly constructed page-turner of novel. It has everything – love, loss, fury, forgiveness – and I was absolutely immersed from page one.”—MARY BETH KEANE, New York Times bestselling author of Ask Again, Yes and The Half Moon
Clare Leslie Hall is a novelist and journalist who lives in the wilds of Dorset, England, with her family. She’s the author of Broken Country, Pictures of Him, and Days You Were Mine.
