Map of Japan in Meiji

Published in 1886, this spectacularly detailed and colourful map, adorned with picturesque vignettes, shows the extent of the Japanese empire as it was during the Meiji era (1868-1912), from the Kuril Islands in the north to Okinawa in the southwest and the Bonin Islands in the south, as well as Korea, linked to Japan by the Treaty of Gangwha (1876) and on the verge of coming under its full domination.
