II. A few years, however, sufficed to produce a great change. Between 1838 and 18641, the British Museum was enriched with no less than five hundred and eighty-one volumes, Syriac, Karshfini and Mandaitic, the greater number of which were procured from a single place, the Convent of S. Mary Deipara in the Nitrian desert in Egypt.
