Cautiously Optomistic

"What a great book. I started and could not stop reading it. How real life and not a lot of dressing it was. I could see the people as they are were. . ."

A courageous loving tribute

"Thank you so much Debbie for an honest and courageous loving tribute to your life partner. Your story is a gift to all of us, and especially those of us who are curious about the ties that bind! Anyone who is lucky enough to read this book will walk more kindly in the world."

Great Read

"The book is a great read. It cleverly interweaves two stories – Debbie and Gerry coming together as a couple and family while simultaneously also describing the process of Gerry’s death. We liked that it was set primarily within the artistic community of downtown St. John’s. It speaks with a clear, authentic and highly believable voice. It gives an intimate insight into how the four-generation McGee-Porter family, and its friend network, dealt with the impending demise of a key member. Such accounts are rarely given as we mostly ignore the subject of death, despite its crushing inevitably. It was a pleasure to read."

Beautifully Engaging

"I recently finished your book and loved it! Thanks so much for your generosity, courage and passion in putting such a deeply personal work into our hands. I didn’t want to put it aside even as I was ready to go to sleep at night. Your writing is so engaging and the pattern of the alternating timelines worked so well. I hadn’t known you and Gerry well at all, but it was so easy to immerse myself in your individual lives, and then your shared journeys in this community among people I did know. Your reflections on the influence of social media at a time of death and dying were important lessons for us all. Again, kudos Debbie and thank you."

A rich emotional journey!

"Debbie is a friend, and I have read versions and bits of Cautiously Pessimistic over the years. Was thrilled to receive the published version in the mail and read cover to cover in one go. Even though I know the story, holding this beautifully designed, actual book was another experience entirely. It was so emotional: I had tears in my eyes throughout. Such a rich emotional journey—funny, wry and full of exquisite pathos and complex insights. Losing your life partner is obviously shattering, but out of the heartache comes wisdom and discovery. Of course, the book also reminds us that while sharing a life with someone is an incredible gift and blessing, we can easily make pettiness, crabbiness and domestic squabbles take on way too much importance, thanks for the reminder! Highly recommended."

Positivity from negativity- perfect title.

"Oh Debbie McGee !! I loved your book, could not put it down! Fabulous writing, very readable, and I did not know that the title was also the name of Gerry‘s blog. It was heartwarming to get to know you both better through this. I am in awe of your bravery for being able to put your story to words for all to see."

A real page turner.

"A real page turner. Brave and true and heartbreaking and funny. Smart and wise. The writing sings, including the weaving of prose and social media extracts. A gift!"

Poignantly uplifting despite the sadness

"This is a fabulous book on so many levels: it is a frank and heartfelt exploration of a relationship, it presents the effects of social media on the ownership of a person (even their death) and really, it is both joyous in parts and heartbreaking in others. Sometimes on the same page. Social media also presents an accounting of evolution of a relationship and character through posts and emails … thank goodness in this instance for the permanence of digital scripts!! I am in awe of how an author can present their strengths and their foibles with equal honesty. It’s a bonus to have walked the same streets and eaten in the same restaurants and been at the same events as the author; described so vividly I smiled to recall sumptuous food served on slabs of wood! This is one of my favourite books of the year so far. Maybe of any year!! And I read a lot! Highly recommend"
