Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed his CONCERTO FOR TRUMPET in E-flat, Hob.VIIe: 1 for the trumpet virtuoso Anton Weidinger. Weidinger was dissatisfied with the limited range of the natural trumpet" as the instrument was then constructed, so he invented a new seven-keyed version on which the player could play a full chromatic scale. Weidinger's version of the instrument was briefly popular but declined in popularity with the invention of the currently used valved trumpet in the 1820s.
