When Rachel and her husband, Abraham, escape from the Siemiatycze ghetto one cold winter night in 1942 with their four-year-old daughter, Chana, they are desperate for refuge. Turned away by the one person they thought they could depend on, they are forced to ask for help from strangers and acquaintances.
