Lievin Kambamba Mboma takes a deep dive into not just the complex history of early New England, but its very structure. He traces the evolution of a region with several different and often competing governance models to a more homogenized system loosely based on the English system of Civil Parish - District - County, which is most democratic (though partly theocratic) at the local level and becomes more and more aristocratic at higher levels.

The work methodically explores specific components of freedom and governance, including the liberties of freemen, liberties of conscience and religion, and representation and demonstrates how they were protected in different jurisdictions throughout New England. It also shows how the New England model was exported to Long Island, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Georgia, and demonstrates links to the U. S. Constitution more than a century later.

Tom Hardiman

Keeper and Executive Director of the Portsmouth Athenaeum

Didactic Book! Lievin Kambamba Mboma gives the readers a great picture of early American and the New England colonies' political system in the 17th century. He depicts conception, labor pains, and the miscarriage of theocracy and aristocracy, with the survival of democracy. This great book is an investigation of the evolution of liberties of conscience and religion, including the representative system in the New England colonies. Furthermore, this work indicates the expansion of the New England colonies' self-governing system in New Jersey, South Carolina, and Georgia. This book is Well researched, well written, and very easy to read and comprehend.

"Lievin Mboma's work is a great deep dive into the inner workings and history of the colonial political structure, while also highlighting the construction of the various institutions that created the foundations of the future states.
