Set in the 10th century, "Ekkehard" transports readers to the medieval world of the Abbey of St. Gall in present-day Switzerland. The story follows the titular character, Ekkehard, a scholarly monk who serves as the librarian of the abbey. Ekkehard is dedicated to his studies and to the preservation of knowledge, finding solace and purpose in the quiet halls of the monastery.However, Ekkehard's peaceful existence is disrupted when the abbey's Abbess, Hadwig, invites the dashing and charismatic Duke of Swabia, Otto, to visit. Otto's arrival brings excitement and turmoil to the abbey, as his presence ignites passions and stirs up long-buried desires among the residents.
