Eleanor H. Porter (1868-1920), was an American author best know for her "Pollyanna" novels. Born in Littleton, New Hampshire, Eleanor became an excellent singer after studying at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In 1892, she married John Lyman Porter and moved to Massachusetts. Eleanor H. Porter started writing short stories, usually set in New England, which were published in the popular magazines and newspapers of the day including "Woman's Home Companion" and "Harper's Weekly". Porter mainly wrote children's literature, including three "Miss Billy" books ("Miss Billy", "Miss Billy's Decision", and "Miss Billy Married"), "Just David" (1916), "Six Star Ranch" (1916), "Cross Currents" (1928), and "The Turn of the Tide" (1908). Her most famous novel is "Pollyanna" (1913), later followed by a sequel, "Pollyanna Grows Up"(1915). With the arrival of "Pollyanna" (1913) Porter won international acclaim.
