Professor of Mathematical Physics at Yale from 1871 until 1903, Gibbs made important theoretical contributions to many areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering. Together with James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann, he was instrumental in creating the discipline of statistical mechanics.
