Many kids will relate to this tale of facing fears

"Many kids will relate to the fears and worries of Ellis in this engaging tale. I especially love how Ellis' identity as a "sworn protector" of her puppy strengthens and grows as they face their worries. I love all the alliteration, and love seeing a nonbinary protagonist."

Calming read about dealing with anxious feelings

"Ellis on Guard is a well illustrated picture book that handles anxiety in a way young readers can understand. Ellis’s worries about protecting their pet are written about in a way to show those same worries can be turned into courage when it matters most. Their bond with Peanut adds warmth and gives the story extra heart. The book deals with a child’s feelings without making them scary or overwhelming."

Excellent Story for Kids

"This book is so lovely for kids with worries and holds a lot of quiet representation."

Honours feelings of anxiety through a child’s lens

"Many young readers will be able to relate to Ellis, who worries about everything from losing their puppy to slipping in puddles. Like Ellis, they may be cautious and prone to Big Worries. ELLIS ON GUARD honours our feelings of anxiety through a child’s lens. When Ellis is able to find courage for the sake of their puppy, Peanut, they model coping strategies and how to co-exist with big feelings. A supportive social-emotional-learning story with engaging illustrations that will warm your heart."

"Sawler's portrayal of Ellis is the perfect blend of lighthearted and sensitive. Sawler ably demonstrates that although Ellis's worries can be a challenge, they can also be a positive thing too, giving them a heightened awareness of the people and things around them, and helping them to develop the ability to plan and to problem solve in creative ways. Charming and affirming, Ellis is a character that many readers of all ages will relate to and be inspired by."
