Evelina Kumari Richmond is a die-hard fan of Elvis Presley.
It’s sad but true: contemporary Indian society is an unhappy riddle. Democracy and socialism, a handsome mismatch, unleashed on the unwary populace has only created a system that is both puzzlingand frustrating for the teeming millions. But it becomes clear to a well-meaning Westerner. So, not surprisingly, the heroine, Evelina Jim Fisher, captures for us a stunning glimpse of Indian inherent virtue and imposed vice. A born warlord of dharma, she fights evil to the best of her ability.
Born to Indian magnate Jim Fisher and American woman Vera Judith, Evelina came to Bangalore as a baby-in-arms after the sudden death of her mother in a plane crash. The doting father refused to remarry and ran his vast business empire, drawing strength from his only daughter. Evelina, a precocious child, voraciously absorbed all possible wisdom and surprised her father with her uncanny sagacity andcourage. Living in luxury, however, did not deter her from helping the miserable. Equally endowed with brains and beauty, she navigated through many miseries in life but almost faltered at one stage when she attempted suicide. She was saved by the ethereal presence of the late American super singer Elvis Aaron Presley.
