The novel that sparked the hugely popular Murdoch Mysteries television series celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Includes a new introduction and a previously unpublished short story featuring the young Detective Murdoch.
In the cold Toronto winter of 1895, the unclad body of a young woman is found naked and frozen in a quiet laneway. Acting Detective William Murdoch, driven by pity for the girl and the desire to secure his promotion, is determined to pursue every lead and reveal the truth. Although influential people pressure the police to solve the mystery quickly, when the girl is eventually identified, it becomes clear that those connected with her life have secrets to hide.
Murdoch must use every detective skill he possesses as well as his understanding of human nature as he pursues the mystery through both brothels and drawing rooms, desperate to untangle the case before more lives are lost.

Different to TV Series - Good in its own way
"When I bought this book, I really wasn't expecting the difference in what the characters would be like as I am a big fan of the TV Series with Bisson etc. It is a good, gritty mystery of the time period and it is especially great if you are familiar with Toronto and its history. It is a very Canadian story and if you are familiar with the area, you can picture the places described. However, if you are going to try the book series because you love the TV series, expect a large difference in the adaptation. Even with the differences I was impressed and wanted to see what happened next, but the gentle characters that I was familiar with were quite different and somewhat of a surprise."

A Catching First !!!
"This was the first Murdoch book I read - it captured Toronto so well in 1895 - great story and a great introduction to all of the characters."

Read Before The T. V. Series !!!
"I started reading the Murdoch books before the television series and was very enthusiastic about them. The setting and characters were established well in Old Toronto."

Except The Dying
"The story is enticing. It reminds me of a loosely based Sherlock Holmes. I love the TV series and this book is decidedly different. Murdock is a little more of the natural man of his times. He shows compassiion without being maudlin; is determined yet still shows a caring attitude to those he is speaking."
