"The most profound and accomplished American novel since the end of World War II."The New Republic

"An event . . . Gravity's Rainbow is longer, darker and more difficult than [Pynchon's] first two books; in fact it is the longest, most difficult and most ambitious novel to appear here since Nabokov's Ada four years ago; its technical and verbal resources bring to mind Melville and Faulkner." —Richard Locke, The New York Times Book Review

"Literally indescribably, a tortured cadenza of lurid imaginings and total recall . . . Its people, like the characters in V., are marginal people, layabouts, dropouts, gangsters, failed scientists, despairing spiritualists, spies, SS men, dancing girls, faded movie stars." —Michael Wood, The New York Review of Books

"A funny, disturbing, exhausting and massive novel, mind-fogging in its range and permutations, its display of knowledge and virtuosity — a metaphysical, phenomenological, technological Mad Comic." —R.Z. Sheppard, Time Magazine

Worth a second read

"I read this book awhile ago and am looking forward to reading it once again"

Christine (5/5)

A crass, bizarre, hilarious adventure.

"This is simply one of the funniest, and strangest books books I have ever read. Would not work with modern mainstream readers, but for those with an open mind it is a must."

Matthew (5/5)

Arrrghhhhhh!!!!!

"This novel is truly a piece of art, and deserves all the credit that it has received. I do however, think this is a book for a select few who can appreciate the historical and philosophical scope of the plot. Although the book forces me to think of the “big questions” of human destiny, I found it intolerably ponderous. I credit any reader who can finish it and say they “enjoyed” it. As a pleasurable experience I give this book a big ZERO, but I qualify that by saying “blame me and my limitations, not the book. ”"

A Perpetually Self-Tossing Word Salad

"Pynchon is often described as a genius. That he might very well be but his prose is nearly inaccessible to me."

TheReviewerOfBooks (1/5)

Amazing

"This book made me experience feeling I never knew I had. Highly recommended."

James (5/5)

Strange but . . .

"it grows on you like nothing else - great book"

SaLe (5/5)

I did not love it, even though I was told I had to

"This book is a challenge and any one who has read it will agree. It is not a lazy Sunday, easy read. It is a book that will command your attention and if that attentions falters for every a paragraph you will be lost. Pynchon begins thoughts half way through, expecting you to know what he is referring to, I often found myself reading blindly and then once I figured out who he was talking about, going back and rereading the pages I was lost in. He will mention characters you will never hear about again, and mention characters in the same breath that will go on to play pivotal roles later on. You just never know, so your find your head being filled with characters. Some parts of the books were difficult to read as it could be quite disturbing. Overall I am glad I read it, but I can not think of many people I know who would enjoy reading this. I was happy when it was over"

Slen (3/5)

Zany, magnificent genius.

"Any book that can combine loony tunes flavoured antics with a deep exploration of war and love and those various unseen forces that drag and pull at man as he makes his way hazily through history is a book that you should probably read, no?"

Jeff (5/5)

Look Out!

"So awesome, so overwhelming. A book to reread for your whole life and still not plumb the depths of . . ."

SaLe (5/5)

Fascinating and infuriating

"in equal parts. The story about ""Byron the bulb"" is great though."

Caddy C. (4/5)
