One of CBC's Best Non Fiction books of 2025.

"Luckily for readers, Kelly stayed the course with Habs Nation . . . . It's a thoughtful reflection on how sport and culture intertwine, how a team derived from humble beginnings becomes a symbol of belonging for millions. Whether read by diehard fans or those who can't tell a power play from a penalty box, Kelly's book makes one thing clear: the Canadiens are more than a hockey club; they're an enduring emblem of identity, history, and heart." Celtic Life International

"What makes a sports team more than just athletes? For the Montreal Canadiens, it's a rich tapestry of cultural significance and national pride, deeply interwoven with Quebec's history. Brendan Kelly explores these themes in Habs Nation, A People's History of the Montreal Canadiens." Jason Winders, The Miramichi Reader (Interview)

"A terrific read. ... Brendan Kelly's new book Habs Nation: A People's History of The Montreal Canadiens really does cover all of the bases and more." Mike Cohen, The Suburban

"As Brendan Kelly writes in his new book, Habs Nation: A People's History of the Montreal Canadiens, few teams in professional sport have forged such a strong link between a society and a club." Eric Andrew-Gee, The Globe and Mail

"Kelly suggests that 'the Montreal Canadiens should be considered a cultural institution rather than a sports team like any other,' (...) Habs Nation should appeal to Montreal Canadiens fans, readers interested in the link between sport and culture, or anyone wishing to take a deeper dive into the relationship between the team and the province of Quebec." Lisa Timpf, The Seaboard Review

"I've read Dryden's The Game, Roy's Winning and Nothing Else, Brodeur's Beyond the Crease, (. . .) Among all these, Kelly's opus stands out because it's more than a book about hockey, about a team; it's about a religion for Quebecers and how they came to be throughout the years. (. . .) If you're only going to read one hockey book this year, this should be the one." Karine Hains, The Hockey News

"In Habs Nation, a charming historical-sports investigation, Brendan Kelly, journalist at The Gazette, suggests that the more Quebecois the CH is, the more likely it is to win the Stanley Cup." Louis Cornellier, Le Devoir

"I don't know much about hockey. But I devoured Brendan Kelly's book." Sophie Durocher, Le journal de Montréal

Brendan Kelly, born in Glasgow, raised in Montreal and a fan of the Canadiens for longer than he can remember, was one of the founders of the alternative weekly Montreal Mirror. He worked at the Montreal Daily News in the late '80s and had a weekly music column on CBC Radio for over 30 years. His Montreal Gazette column "What the Puck" is a controversial contrarian hot take on the Canadiens that elicits much hate and even more love. He has written for the Gazette since 1996. He contributes frequently to various Radio-Canada cultural shows.

The recipient of numerous honours and awards and considered one of the world's top players, Marie-Philip Poulin is Captain of the Montreal Victoire and won the 2025 PWHL Most Valuable Player Award.

Terry Mosher, alias Aislin, has been renowned cartoonist for the Montreal Gazette for decades. He lives in Montreal.
