Reviews

The book suggests that the only way to stop time, is not by leaving forever, but by truly beaing present in the moment.

"The book was really unique! I loved how it blended real history with a very human story about time, love, and loneliness. It made me think a lot, but it was also easy to read and engaging. I thought How to Stop Time was a beautiful and moving story. I liked how the author used Tom’s long life to explore themes like memory, identity, and what really makes life meaningful. Sometimes it felt a little sad, but overall it left me with a hopeful message about appreciating the present"

Great Story, Great Writing

"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After a string of books that at times made me question whether I was just a curmudgeon who really didn’t enjoy reading as much as my history and self image would suggest, this reaffirmed my love of falling into a world someone else has created. I have a soft spot for books that play with time. Time travel, relived lives, long lives - I love all the time related tropes. And this one will sit in a place high on the list of books in this genre. Tom is a man who has lived for over 400 years. He has seen horrible things and suffered unbelievable tragedy, and it seems that much of his long life has been simply putting in time. He has fallen into a society for those with his particular affliction, and follows the very specific rules. Don’t have your picture taken. Don’t stay in one place more than 8 years. And don’t fall in love. The story flips back and forth between present day, and memorable times in Tom’s past that reveal key people and events. The writing is beautiful and engaging, the characters well developed. This is not an action packed thriller, it is more of a character study, the focus is revealing who Tom is and why he is the way he is. The book is just over 300 pages and they move quickly. I enjoyed the dialogue, the casual historical name dropping, the perspective on changing times. Tom had an early true love and their story was beautiful and heartbreaking, and his ongoing quest to find someone important to him across the centuries was poignant. I highly recommend this book."

Interesting premise & love the variety of settings & places

"This story is a delicate weaving of self, history, life, and growing wisdom. I appreciated the unique premise of the novel and it was a fast read. Definitely recommend!"

What would you do if you lived forever?

"So far this book is fascinating. Perative to a vampire life, but not a vampire book. The main character talks about his life through the lens of aging at a slower rate. His mind holds all the wisdom, but his body takes longer to age. I really enjoy the introspection by the main character."

How Matt Haig stopped time

"Oh Matt Haig! What a lovely piece of writing I truly could not put down. How to stop time is a beautiful story through history told by characters impossible not to fall in love with."

Off the beaten track:

"A thoughtful book on many levels - various possible needs for anonymity, the passage of time, memory, the endurance of relationships, and what is essentially human"

Pre-emptive

"This is my second book by Matt Haig. I haven’t gotten to it yet, but The Midnight Library touched my heart so deeply that I had to pick this one up! I’m a sucker for a good time travel romance and, while Midnight Library wasn’t really time travel, it gave me a taste of what to expect from this one! I can’t wait!"

Michelle (5/5)

Being a senior, the title definitely intrigued me.

"It was a thoughtful read. The protagonist is struggling with the fact he will live longer, plus the loss of his daughter who he is always searching for. The going back in time helps us understand his dilemmas."

Will read this again and again

"I just finished this novel this morning and am so glad I picked this up off the shelf. It is a story of love and loss and the importance of love in your life. Will definitely be recommending this book!"
