Charmaine Toh, Ph.D. (2022), University of Melbourne, is Senior Curator at National Gallery Singapore, where she researches photography and contemporary art in Southeast Asia. Her most recent exhibition is Living Pictures (2022), the first major survey of photography in Southeast Asia.
Charmaine Toh’s account of Singapore pictorialism adds to a wider understanding of pictorialism outside of Europe and America, as well as showing how the movement evolved locally into the later twentieth century. [...] It is an important contribution to photographic literature and the study of Asian photography and is highly recommended.
