Winner of the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize

"Enormously compelling . . . and Maté, as noted, is admirably, sometimes inexplicably, empathetic to all who cross his path." —Toronto Star

"A harrowingly honest, compassionate, sometimes angry look at addiction and the people whose lives have been disordered by it." —Ottawa Citizen

"An insightful, multilayered discussion of the nature of addiction generally, and our society's epidemic of addictions in particular." —The Globe and Mail

“A nuanced and complex meditation on what opium-eaterThomasde Quincy called the ‘abiding darkness’. . . . A powerful and compassionatework.” —NOW

"Maté does a great service by forcing us to confront the us-and-them mentality that drives the get-tough responses to addiction. . . . I highly recommend Hungry Ghosts to everyone seeking insight into addiction." The Vancouver Sun

"Excellent.... One of the book's strengths is Maté's detailed and compassionate characterization of the afflicted addicts he treats, but this is not just a memoir. Rather, using his own experience as well as the most advanced recent research, he attempts to delineate the closely interrelated psychological, social, and neurological dimensions of addiction. . . . A calm, unjudging, compassionate attentiveness to what is happening within." —The Walrus

"It's compulsively readable and packed with new scientific discoveries about addiction." —The Georgia Straight

Some Praise for Mate

"Around about a month before purchasing Gabor Mate's """"The Realm"""", I have been listening to his podcasts and watching various Youtube videos of his lectures and presentations. I am also struggling with some certain (stigmatized) addictions. I haven't finished this book at the time of writing this review, but as anticipated, it has been so far so great of a read. And, as anticipated, it will be a personal relic to cherish in my library. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who are themselves, or knows (and cares about) someone who is in the grips of some addiction (from online shopping, video games, and sex, to drugs and alcohol); it is packed with highly accessible information written by an expert with decades of experience in the relevant fields for the topic."

Compelling Look into the 'why' of addiction

"Excellent book regarding the nature of addiction, mixed in with Gabor Mate's clinical experience"

Compassionate lens to the addiction crisis

"Well written experience of a doctor working in one of the hardest hit areas in terms of severe substance use disorder and homelessness. Dr. Matè provides a truly compassionate view of the challenges faced by individuals struggling with addictions. He also provides ideas as to some of the potential primary contributing factors. Gabor writes about his patients eloquently and honestly. He shares individual stories that create a more personal connection to other people in order to help readers understand and care about what is going on. A good read for anyone who is dealing with addiction on any level (and that is pretty much everyone; addicts, children of addicts, siblings, friends, coworkers, extended families…we are all affected by this crisis)"

The Brain and Addiction

"This book explains addiction very well and especially the connections it has to the brain. I learned how complex addiction is in its demands on the brain and how the brain reacts to substances. It is very complicated and this book could do with a few readings to get a full understanding - especially for someone who is not medically trained."
