A native of Florence, Mississippi, Ben Wynne earned his doctorate degree in history from the University of Mississippi. He currently teaches at the University of North Georgia and has written several works related to southern history.

"Ben Wynne is clearly ''in tune'' from the first page to the last of this brilliantly conceived, beautifully written, and often moving account of two remarkably creative performers of different races who drew on their otherwise comparable circumstances to produce what was ''not black or white music, but American music,'' a legacy, that as Wynne shows, was simply too powerful, even for the formidable racial barriers of their era to ''soften or mute.''" - James C. Cobb, author of The South and America since World War II
