Dorothy Tristan is a multitalented artist who was born in Yorkville Heights, New York, in the mid-twentieth century. She started out as a Ford fashion model, traveling the world and appearing on covers of fashion magazines such as Life and Vogue. Later she transitioned into acting, playing leading roles on stage, television, and film. She won a best actress award for her stage performance of Blanche in A Street Car Named Desire, and starred in films such as Klute, Scarecrow, and End of the Road. She has worked with actors such as Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, Gene Hackman, Al Pacino, and James Earl Jones.

In recent years, Tristan has focused on her writing. Collaborating with her husband, John Hancock, she has written the screenplays for four of his films: Steal the Sky, Weeds, A Piece of Eden, and Suspended Animation.

Also a mother and a grandmother, Tristan lives on the family farm in LaPorte County, Indiana, with her husband.
