Julia Duane Quinlan, CEO, is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice.
Together with her late husband, Joseph, she established the hospice in 1980 in loving memory of their daughter Karen Ann. During the past four decades, Julia has selflessly dedicated herself to ensuring dignified, comforting care for terminally ill patients and their families.
Julia is recognized as a national speaker across the country on ethics, end-of-life care, hospice, and the historic importance of the Quinlan landmark decision. She is co-author of "Karen Ann" (Doubleday), and the author of "My Joy, My Sorrow" (St. Anthony Messenger Press, 2005).
Julia is a well-known and respected speaker. She has appeared on national television in Europe and Asia and on national talk shows and news broadcasts.
The Senate and General Assembly of New Jersey have recognized Julia for her achievements in health care. She has received the New Jersey Hospice Community Leader Award and was included in People magazine's 1999 Special Anniversary issue under "Profiles in Courage." The First Annual Joseph and Julia Quinlan Award was presented to her by the New Jersey End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (NJ-ELNEC) March 2007 for her inspiration in advancing End of Life and Palliative Care.
Julia resides in Wantage, Sussex County, New Jersey. Her son, John, and daughter, Mary Ellen, are also Sussex County residents.
