Née en Biélorussie en 1947, Svetlana Alexievitch a commencé sa carrière d'écrivain par deux livres d'enquêtes et de témoignages sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale, La guerre n'aura pas un visage de femme (1985) et Le Témoin. Son troisième livre, Les Cercueils de zinc, a provoqué un véritable scandale dans son pays. Certains de ses ouvrages restent toujours interdits dans son pays d'origine et Svetlana Alexievitch s'est vue contrainte à s'exiler d'abord en France puis en Suède où elle réside actuellement.
