Écrivain britannique, ami de Coleridge et de Wordsworth, sa dépendance à l'opium lui inspirera les Confessions d'un mangeur d'opium anglais (1822), que commentera Baudelaire dans Les Paradis artificiels. On lui doit également De l'assassinat considéré comme l'un des beaux-arts (1827). Il figure dans l'Anthologie de l'humour noir d'André Breton.
