Enduring Children's Classic.

"We bought these for Christmas for my 9 year nightly read aloud together. We are transported back in time and love every scene and chapter. Enduring classic children's literature."

Favourite childhood classic

"Product is just as I remembered when I was 8 in 1979"

Marie (5/5)

Perfect!

"Beautiful illustrations to compliment a sweet story! Our kids love looking at the coloured pictures even when we aren’t reading the story together."

Timeless

"I had a great time reading these book when I was younger and would highly recommend."

Stands the test of time!

"I read this series when I was a little girl. I started reading this series to my daughter at bedtime when she was eight. She is now ten years old and we just started the last book. We have had wonderful discussions about what life was like over a hundred years ago. She loves Laura and all the real characters described so vividly in these books. The descriptions can be a little long but I just skipped over them. I highly recommend this series. Children can read them by themselves, but I found that reading to my child was a good way to start discussions about the difference between then and now. There are themes of loss, financial hardship and sacrifice. Love between siblings. There is some racism too, so an excellent opportunity to have a conversation."

Amazing, amazing, amazing

"Absolutely love this series. Beautiful for families to read together, but also an easy book for ages 9+ to read on their own. Some sad parts, especially when the family has to move a lot, or when people get sick etc. Would recommend to anyone and everyone (though of course not everyone will like it)."

Amazing classic about great family values!!

"Got the books for my kids. They love the idea of living on a farm. . . Great story about simpler times and about family."

Amarevita (5/5)

My daughter loves them as much as I did.

"I read these as a child and loved them, so I bought my daughter the first book to try. She loved it as much as I did and now is working through the series. She is 7 and reads at an advanced level for her age, but has had no problems getting through the stories. The first is her favourite so far, followed by Little House on the Prairie."

Little House on the Prairie 1-4

"This is a classic series. So fun and loving."

Caroline (5/5)

A must read

"These books teach the kids about the history of North America through the eyes of another kid, and does it is in a charming, understated way. The story is told by a girl, but is just as interesting for a boy to read as describes a lot of things Laura's father did. My son was mesmerized by all these simple accounts of, for example, building a house using wooden nails and leather hinges. There was a TV series, and we tried to watch it, but the books are much, much more interesting."

Wilder was born near Pepin, Wisconsin; attended school in DeSmet, South Dakota; and became a teacher before she was 16, teaching for seven years in Dakota Territory schools. She and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, farmed near DeSmet for about nine years and then moved to Mansfield, Missouri, where they lived out the rest of their days. Wilder did not write her first book, Little House in the Big Woods, about her early years in Wisconsin, until late in life, on the urging of her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane. It was first published in 1932. She followed this with Farmer Boy (1933), a book about her husband's childhood in New York State. She then completed a series of books about her life as she and her family moved westward along the frontier. Little House on the Prairie (1935) records the family's move to Kansas. On the Banks of Plum Creek (1937) describes the family's move to Minnesota. By the Shores of Silver Lake (1939) records the family's move to South Dakota, as do the final three books in the series: The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie (1941), and These Happy Golden Years (1943), which ends with her marriage to Almanzo Wilder. Three of Wilder's books were published posthumously: On the Way Home, a diary of her trip to Mansfield; The First Four Years, an unfinished book about her first four years of marriage; and West from Home, letters she wrote on a visit to her daughter in San Francisco, none of them up to the quality of her earlier books. At her best, Wilder employs a clear, simple style, a wealth of fascinating detail, and a straightforward narrative style. Her tales of a strong, traditional frontier family that endures the hardships of the late eighteenth century are seen through the eyes of a child, which endears them to young readers. Her work is possibly the best example of historical realistic fiction for children.
