In 2008, The Times ranked Ian Fleming fourteenth on its list of the ‘Fifty Greatest British Writers since 1945’, an accolade awarded following the amazing success of the James Bond novels. Born in 1908, Ian Fleming was educated at Eton, Sandhurst and at the universities of Munich and Geneva, and went on to careers in banking and journalism. During the Second World War, he was a senior naval intelligence officer; in 1945 he returned to journalism. His varied and colourful experience of life informed his writing and give James Bond, his colleagues and his adversaries very real and believable personalities. After living for some years in Jamaica, he died back in England in 1964.
