In 1870, when Jewel, a young woman from the Piedmont of North Carolina, falls in love and marries Charles, a widower from the mountains of Western North Carolina, her life is eternally changed. She becomes the mother of two rambunctious twin boys and is cast into situations that she never dreamed possible. Her strong faith in God sustains her as she learns to become a wife and a mother. Jewel, who once filled her days with church volunteer work and crocheting, must now do all the work required to provide for her new family. Jewel faces trials of every sort, from snakes and a charging wild boar to the cold shoulder of her new mother-in-law.
