Reviews

An unconventional life well lived

"This was a wild read - Dag has lived an incredible life. His story is conveyed with so much warmth, care and empathy by the author. It is a clear eyed account of what are sometimes difficult circumstances, with no drama and no judgment. I couldn’t put it down. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in the limits of the human body and mind, living life “off grid”, and unconventional choices."

Brendan (4/5)

Highly recommend

"Absolutely engaging, couldn't put it down. Highly recommend."

A MUST READ

"This is an excellent book. Such an interesting story and so well written. I love it when an author takes there time to research their work and outs their heart and soul into writing. I have always found stories about people very interesting and inspiring. Everyone has a story. I hope this author continues to write. I will look for him."

Kathy C. (5/5)

Aging Extreme Athlete haunted by WW II influence on his family history.

"Very interesting story of a now elderly athlete who cannot fit into society. Found his family history in wartime Norway very interesting. Can only hope he is more comfortable in his own life as he continues to age!"

Penence (5/5)

Incredible read

"Amazing, I cried, I laughed"

Jdawn (5/5)

Well Researched

"This is a good read, a good mystery with a twist at the end. Brent Popplewell spent 8 years interviewing Dag Aabye, his estranged wife and children, people who had known him long ago and recently. He researched archives in Norway where Aabye was born and other Scandinavian countries that he was connected to."

intriguing story

"This story is well written and the author did a great job to retreive various informations from a distant, dark and hidden past. I also enjoy the way the author describe this man in a humanely manner, leaving prejudice behind and not trying to understand him, but just trying his best to show us what lies beneath that hard-to-pierce shell."

Charles (5/5)

Extremely captivating!

"When I first got this book I was interested to learn about how one man could run such extreme distance’s, especially for his age but, this story goes much further than that. The past of one man makes you keep turning the pages and holds you right to the end. I highly recommend this book."

A Fascinating Human Story

"History classes in school teach you the basics of the World War II and the holocaust, but does little to describe the impact of the German occupation on ordinary people. This is the story of one man who was impacted by his experience growing up in German occupied Norway without understanding what caused him to make his major life decisions. It speaks of physical and mental strength and a search for his real origin"

“A spellbinding and immersive portrait of a man who skirted the fringes of society as one of our great enigmas: recluse, prodigy, wildman, ultra-athlete, guru. Outsider is a riveting, deeply affecting book about the history we run from, and the limits we run to.” - Harley Rustad, author of Lost in the Valley of Death: A Story of Obsession and Danger in the Himalayas

"A fascinating and thought-provoking saga that will make you rethink your self-imposed limits." - Alex Hutchinson, author of the New York Times bestseller Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance

"In Outsider, Brett Popplewell deploys his impeccable narrative skills to produce a biography that is equal parts engrossing, heart-wrenching and inspirational. With fascinating sojourns to Nazi-occupied Norway and the dawn of extreme skiing, Outsider ultimately traces one man's path to finding a deep and abiding joy in existence amid remarkably unconventional circumstances.” - Sarah Everts, author of The Joy of Sweat

"A fascinating mystery, eloquently told." - Adam Shoalts, Ph.D., bestselling author of Beyond the Trees and The Whisper on the Night Wind

"If you do a deep dive on the life of any average person, you’ll find a story worth telling. In Outsider, Brett Popplewell has gone subterranean on someone so extraordinary that he seems imaginary. But you couldn’t invent Dag Aabye. He’d already invented himself.” - Cathal Kelly, author of Boy Wonders: A Memoir of Childhood, Obsession and Growing Up
