Peace journalism in Africa is not a new concept at all, what’s new is the name, the academic framing, and the attempt to systematize it inside modern media institutions. Peace journalism is an African memory, not an import. Long before newspapers, radios, or TV Griots in West Africa shaped narratives to prevent revenge cycles, Guurti elders in Somali society mediated conflict through careful language, Gacaca communicators in Rwanda emphasized restoration, not humiliation, Ethiopian shimagilé chose words to cool hearts before judgments, Ashanti stool historians preserved truth to maintain social balance These were journalists before journalism they understood one key rule: Words can kill, and words can heal. That is the soul of peace journalism. So for Africa, peace journalism is a return, not a discovery.
