Why Pride and Prejudice Still Slaps Today

"Pride and Prejudice is a classic for a reason. Jane Austen mixes drama, family chaos, and sharp humour in a way that still feels relatable today. Elizabeth Bennet is witty and independent, making her super easy to root for, and the slow-build tension between her and Mr. Darcy is one of the best parts of the story. Even though the setting is from the 1800s, the themes, judgment, pride, misunderstandings, and figuring out what you really want, still hit. Some parts can feel a bit slow if you’re not used to older writing, but overall it’s clever, charming, and surprisingly funny."

Wrapped in a warm cozy blanket

"I have read Pride and Prejudice about 100 times. I read it when I’m feeling down or have lost control and need to feel light and happy. I’m not sure what it is about the story that makes me feel like I’ve just wrapped a warm blanket around myself, but it is my comfort book and I read it at least once or twice a year. I have two copies of this book, my first is so worn out that pages were falling out of it. Then my husband gifted me with the most beautiful hardcover version. I bought this one to gift to a friend because it was also a beautiful cover and I hope it brings her as much peace and comfort as it has brought me."

“The wit of Jane Austen has for partner the perfection of her taste.” —Virginia Woolf

“Nobody has ever been slyer with characters than Austen.” —Marlon James, “My 10 Favorite Books,” in T: The New York Times Style Magazine
Jane Austen, the daughter of a clergyman, was born in Hampshire in 1775, and later lived in Bath and the village of Chawton. As a child and teenager, she wrote brilliantly witty stories for her family's amusement, as well as a novella, Lady Susan. Her first published novel was Sense and Sensibility, which appeared in 1811 and was soon followed by Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Austen died in 1817, and Persuasion and Northanger Abbey were published posthumously in 1818.
