Grandma got a thumbs up

"I bought this book for my 9 year old granddaughter. She loved it and she used it at school for her first book report. She called me to brag about how wonderful the book was and while she is a good reader and reads a lot she was so excited about the book, "" Grandma, this is the best book ever!!!"" While I have bought her other gifts she has liked , this book won the prize for excutement and joy. More importantly it has given me the confidence to select one book per month to send to her as we live 6 hours apart. I am very pleased to be able to share a live of reading. I would highly recommend this book to all Grandparents who are up for engaging their grandkids."

An Essential Read

"My 10 year old son wanted to read this but I decided to read it myself to see if it was appropriate for his age. I found the book well written and felt empathy towards all the characters struggling to escape communism, terrorism and/or war. Being an immigrant myself escaping a war torn country to come to Canada, I was able to relate to this read but also was triggered by many of the events that was described in this novel. I do think this is an essential read for young kids, but maybe for 12 or 13 years old and up. I would also state openly that this can be a trigger read for some and be mindful as a parent or teacher when/if introducing this book to a young reader. That being said, I do want my son to eventually read this when I know he is mature enough to handle the content. This book will build empathy and raise awareness of what refugees undergo and allow people to see the commonalities between people of different races and religion and that most just want one thing - to be accepted, be treated with respect, and have the freedom to just be who they are without the fear of being judged."
