Ruben George Olivenis a Professor of Anthropology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. A former Fulbright Scholar, he has held visiting professorships at several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, Brown University, Dartmouth College, the University of Paris, and Leiden University. He is the recipient of the Érico Vannucci Mendes Prize for his distinguished contributions to the study of Brazilian culture. His research focuses on urbanization, national and regional identities, popular culture and music, and the symbolic dimensions of money.
