Simply the Best Read for Me in 2025!

"Absolutely a first class read of a young man trying to recover faith in himself , who has escaped from prison in Austraia and discovers a new life in modern day Bombay. The ending promises hope and redemption. The author bases this epic on personal life experiences. You cannot help being changed by this read. I have not read anything better this year."

Dark, Darker and Darkest

"If you like to have your nose rubbed into all of the underside of humanity without any hope or faith in anything this is your read."

Blackraven (1/5)

Bre C. (5/5)

Great read

"Enjoying this read but only half through. Story written documentary style about living in India under the worst and best of conditions."

JMSJ (4/5)

Long but worth it

"While it is a huge book (1000 pages) it takes you along for a very interesting story with an unreliable narrator."

Survival of Enlightenment

"Shantaram is a real page turner, one of the most captivating stories and character development I have read in a long time. There is a deep sense of spirituality without it being preachy, just enough to be challenging our standards of moral and ethics that often conflict with others' reality. The story presents some possibilities of enlightenment even in the most horrifying of circumstances."

Minaz J. (5/5)

Such an amazing story

"One of the best books I’ve ever read. The detail is amazing. Makes you feel like you’re right with the character throughout the entire story."

Lucky L. (5/5)

My Number One

"Shantaram takes you to another time and place…the story (based on the author’s life) contains so many intricately woven stories that keep you turning the pages. The characters are so alive and the descriptions of Mumbai (then-Bombay) are incredible. In the last ten years, I’ve read the book at least five times through, and find myself opening it and reading some of the middle chapters just to reconnect with the characters. I’ve lent my book out three times…the fourth time I left it with a friend to continue passing it on. This is my second copy. As a side note, I travelled to India one summer and made Mumbai a key part of my trip so I could visit the places described in the book. The new series on Apple TV does the book justice, but, like most book adaptations, I’d recommend reading the book first so the characters can come to life in your mind before seeing someone else’s interpretation. 6 stars (if possible)."

Laura M. (5/5)

Amazing choice

"This is really really a great novel , my co-worker recommended it to me and as I trusted him I bought it, when I went shopping I realized it’s header’s peak as well. I enjoyed it very much, wouldn’t never forget beautiful sentences in it."

Shantaram is a novel of the first order, a work of extraordinary art, a thing of exceptional beauty. If someone asked me what the book was about, I would have to say everything, every thing in the world. Gregory David Roberts does for Bombay what Lawrence Durrell did for Alexandria, what Melville did for the South Seas, and what Thoreau did for Walden Pond: He makes it an eternal player in the literature of the world.” —Pat Conroy

Shantaram has provided me with the richest reading experience to date and I don't expect anybody to unseat its all-round performance for a long time. It is seductive, powerful, complex, and blessed with a perfect voice. Like a voodoo ghost snatcher, Gregory David Roberts has captured the spirits of the likes of Henri Charrière, Rohinton Mistry, Tom Wolfe, and Mario Vargas Llosa, fused them with his own unique magic, and built the most gripping monument in print. The land of the god Ganesh has unchained the elephant, and with the monster running amok, I tremble for the brave soul dreaming of writing a novel about India. Gregory David Roberts is a suitable giant, a dazzling guru, and a genius in full.” —Moses Isegawa, author of Abyssinian Chronicles and Snakepit

“Shantaram is, quite simply, the 1001 Arabian Nights of the new century. Anyone who loves to read has been looking for this book all their reading life. Anyone who walks away from Shantaram untouched is either heartless or dead or both. I haven't had such a wonderful time in years.” —Jonathan Carroll, author of White Apples

“Shantaram is dazzling. More importantly, it offers a lesson...that those we incarcerate are human beings. They deserve to be treated with dignity. Some of them, after all, may be exceptional. Some may even possess genius.” —Ayelet Waldman, author of Murder Plays House

Gregory David Roberts, the author of Shantaram and its sequel, The Mountain Shadow, was born in Melbourne, Australia. Sentenced to nineteen years in prison for a series of armed robberies, he escaped and spent ten of his fugitive years in Bombay—where he established a free medical clinic for slum-dwellers, and worked as a counterfeiter, smuggler, gunrunner, and street soldier for a branch of the Bombay mafia. Recaptured, he served out his sentence, and established a successful multimedia company upon his release. Roberts is now a full-time writer and lives in Bombay.
