Reviews

A decent summer read. . not life changing. .

"I liked the first half but it lost momentum after that . . likeable characters, predictably but an easy summer read when that’s what you are looking for!"

Another hit from Rowell

"When you buy a Rainbow Rowell book, you know that you will get beautiful writing, well developed characters that you care about, and a plot that unfolds at the pace of a master. ""Slow Dance"" does not dissapoint, providing another example of why she is on of my favourite authors."

Jolene O. (5/5)

It was appropriate title for the book.

"Really liked the storyline and back and forth between past and present. It wasn’t as predictable a story as I had originally expected based on the summary."

THIS WAS PERFECTION 🥹

"To be honest, I wasn't a fan of the writing or the FMC in the beginning of the novel. Although I don't mind third-person POV, it seemed that the FMC or MMC name was used excessively in this novel. For instance, in a single paragraph, the author will merely say ""Shiloh did that. . . Shiloh think that. . . "" without using ""she"" or other nouns to refer to Shiloh. The story seemed to be more told than showed. However, I went to Reddit (because it's my favorite site to read reviews because of how forthright people are), and all I could find were amazing reviews for the book. In conclusion, I discovered that the FMC IS NEURODIVERGENT coded. Although this book makes no mention of it, this author is well known for creating neuro-divergent protagonists in her works. Everything made sense thanks to that revelation. Like the FMC was so neuro-divergent coded. With this new knowledge, everything she said or did made perfect sense. I adore characters who are neurodivergent. They view the world through a different lens than the ""typical"" human being, and I just adore learning about their opinions. After this reveal, I DEVOURED this book. The author succeeded in writing believable, imperfect, and genuinely human characters. In this book, we saw their growth, and you just couldn’t stop yourself falling in love with these characters. She handled the challenges of love loss, rediscovery, anxiety, and complicated family relationships well. At its heart, this book was really romantic. Reading about how supportive Shiloh and Cary were of one another throughout the difficult times was simply stunning. I AM SHILOH NUMBER ONE DEFENDER🫡. Although she was a complicated figure to understand, she is at heart just a human trying to make sense of life, just like everyone else. I liked that she didn't hesitate to admit her shortcomings and that she isn't afraid to make amends or better herself. Despite his obstinate nature, Cary was the ideal companion for Shiloh. Reading about his family situation was heartbreaking, but I was so happy for him at the end. I was really moved & emotional by the conclusion of this story, when Shiloh & Cary could no longer hide their true feelings and intentions for one another🥹. I was quite happy that there wasn't a third act break up. This is the perfect conclusion for them✨ This book was to profound, real and raw💕"

Heartwrenching

"Sooo cute and heartfelt! Was a bit slow paced for me but worth it"

A must red

"I loved this book - Whitty, fun, engaging until the last page:"

Jaycee S. (5/5)

An easy, fun read.

"This was a comfortable read (almost like a cozy mystery without the mystery). It had romance (although very little 'spice'), great dialogue and characters and dealt with many real life problems. It did move slowly at times, but I did not mind that. Both main characters had family issues and I found the parenting issues to be very realistic. Thank to Edelweiss+ for the digital advance reading copy. 4/5 stars!"

Slow Dance is a Must read.

"Perhaps Rainbow Rowell's best work to date. An emotional rollercoaster that balances nostalgia with the present."

Dakota (5/5)

Heartfelt characters that mature and grow together

"Loved these characters so much. One of the first second chance romances where the separation made sense despite how sad it is that they had spent so much time apart. The dialogue is always so realistic in Rainbow’s books. I read it through and then started it again right away."

“A gorgeous book. Slow Dance by Rainbow Rowell is a beautiful, believable love story between two slightly broken people. It was so sweet, but never sentimental. I yearned for them to be happy, and I miss it now it’s over.” - International bestselling author Marian Keyes
“Fans of Rainbow Rowell may already know her signature style: Her books will make you gasp with recognition, laugh along with the characters' hijinks and probably leak a tear or two as they figure themselves out.” - People
“Witty, insightful and uncompromising, Rainbow Rowell’s Slow Dance is an emotionally charged and beautifully real romance.” - BookPage
“If you, like me, think thirty-somethings methodically working through their issues is very hot, Slow Dance is the book for you. The people in it feel like people you know or maybe even people you’ve been. Slow Dance is sexy, sweet, wise, and nostalgic – Jane Austen’s Persuasion for our times.” - Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times bestselling author of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
“Rowell does longing like nobody’s business. She pits epic love against relatable, painful foibles. …Chapters that dip back in time play to Rowell’s strength writing the confused passions of teenagers and show just how long these two have been absolutely gone for each other. Readers will be desperate to see them work it out. A treat for fans of Rowell and of realistic romance.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Readers who enjoyed Landline and Eleanor & Park will be glad to return to Rowell’s unique storytelling style and lyrical prose... It’s guaranteed to make hearts flutter, likely while bringing tears to readers’ eyes.” - Library Journal
“With tenderness and charm, Slow Dance describes what happens when someone finds their person, within a life and in a place where they'd rather not be, and how moving forward from calcified hurt is possible, given the brevity of life.” - Shelf Awareness
“Rowell takes her time revealing the couple's origins as high-school besties, the conflicts they helped each other through as teens in working-class families and those they're dealing with now, the long period of silence between them, and the undeniable glimmers of their enduring mutual attraction. Their dance is sweet and sexy, and Rowell draws out the whole, simmering affair as she ping-pongs through her characters' past and present. . . . [Slow Dance is] sure to be a crowd-pleaser.” - Booklist (starred review)
“The funny, wised-up dialogue, the tumultuous, sweet, and sexy love story is grade-A Rowell . . . a book that readers will find almost impossible to put down.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Carry On
“Perfectly mixing sweet romance with deliciously tart wit, Rowell’s literary debut is a complete charmer.” - Chicago Tribune on Attachments
"Rich, real, and emotionally raw, this satisfying contemporary is sure to impress."  - Publishers Weekly
“Who can deny the absolute, dizzy pleasure of loving a novel so much that you cannot bear to put it down, that you want to do nothing but keep flipping pages, that you want to immerse yourself fully and not come up for air until you are finished. I read Slow Dance in just that way, breathless and weeping. There is no one better than Rainbow at creating flawed, deeply human people. I loved every page of Slow Dance, a book that is romantic to its core, and as funny and smart as its wonderful characters. I will miss being in this world.”
- Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author

“Rowell is talented enough to be uncategorizable. . . . Landline belongs to a genre of its very own.” - New York Times
“Rowell pulls off this impossible premise with great charm, and her depictions of the couple’s sweet courtship and their later compromise-filled marriage are equally unsentimental and knowing.” - The New Yorker on Landline
"Her writing swings from profane to profound, but it’s always real and always raw.” - NPR on Eleanor & Park
