The brief Narrative, which stands first in this volume, was drawn up by my father many years ago, for private circulation, and with a view to the establishment of certain claims, which he was then prosecuting. The Collection of Papers which follows-consists of official letters, and other documents ex tracted from public records, relative to his services in India, during a period of twenty seven years. A sketch of his public life being afforded by these materials, combining facts and testimonies highly honourable to his memory, I have been induced to put.
