Excerpt from Souvenir of the Golden Jubilee of St. Patrick's T. A. And B. Society, 1840-1890
At the regular monthly meeting of the St. Patrick's Total Abstinence and Benefit Society, held after Vespers on Sunday after noon, November 1oth, 1889, Hon. Senator Edward Murphy in the chair the Secretary, Mr. Jas. J. Costigan, after the transaction of the ordinary business, drew the attention of the members to the fact that, in the month of February, 1890, the Society would enter upon the fiftieth year of its existence. The event, he said, was a most important one, and the Society should at once take action towards having it appropriately celebrated. The Hon. Chairman, Mr. Murphy, then addressed the meeting. He reviewed the history of the Society from its formation on Sunday, Feb. 2 3rd, 1840. As the Hon. Gentleman has been an eye-witness of every event con nected with the Society from its inception in 1840, his address was listened to with great attention and interest, and, on resuming his seat, he was most enthusiastically applauded.
